Many species range in size as well as having distinct flower variations in the colour and shape of their cone. The name Protea originates from the Greek Legend of Proteus, a Greek God who could change his form at will. This seems appropriate given the significant variations of form within the Protea family. Proteas form the taller canopy in South African Fynbos vegetation, often growing 3 to 4 metres high. Protea nectar attracts birds, bees and insects, all vital to the natural ecosystem.

The king protea is the most popular variety, having one of the largest flower heads in the protea family. The king white protea produces stunning large white flowers which can reach up to 30cm in diameter once the plant is established.

The madiba protea is a smaller king protea variety which displays stunning red-pink flowers during winter and spring on long stems. A popular cut flower variety, it is also suitable for the home garden.

Pink ice is the hardiest of all proteas, and is well suited to a low maintenance and low water use garden. Its deep rose pink flowers can be enjoyed fresh or dried, making it an excellent choice for cut flower growers.

A rounded shrub bearing very attractive lime greeny-white flowers for a number of months during the yearespecially during winter. Popular for picking and suited to average well drained soils.
